Being Called to be an Artist v. Being Called to Create

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •

On my blog, I've championed the idea that Christians have the permission, and indeed duty, to critique art so that as we embody Christ in art, we present something beautiful, redemptive, and excellent.

So today, I want to take a moment to look at the spiritual discipline of being creative--a discipline everyone, artist or not, can (and should) participate in. I want to show you the difference in my life between being creative and being an artist.

This is my first video blog. It runs approximately 8 min.

Becoming an artist is about developing a dialogue between what you are communicating and what you’re absorbing from your surroundings

Love the video! I might get up the nerve to do a pod cast, but not video blog...yet!

Heather,

I've been reading & watching (& cheering you from the sidelines) you for quite a while now. You're settling into who you're to become I think. Not settling as in complacency, but more into a life with direction. Clarity.

It's wonderful you're a sweet voice encouraging "us" to pursue creativity in LIFE! Sometimes, we DO need permission! Somehow, from childhood to adult, we think we lose that right...or maybe the demands crowd it out. But...that's a sad lie.

Thanks for sharing your life and for showing us what you mean in these distinctions (artistry vs. creativity).

Well done, Chicka :).

Thank you!

Picasso said, "All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

Wow, thank you for that, Heather. I thought your illustration of your music vs. your writing was interesting, and it hit your point home. I'm hoping to come to the point where I understand which things fit in which category for me.

Your words also kind of reminded me of an article I read by John Piper called "Meditation on the Imagination." I put some pictures and music to it and turned it into a Youtube video here if you haven't already read it.

Thanks again.

This video blogging really suits you, Heather. You look lovely on screen. (I'd be doing it with a paper bag over my head. Hehe.)

Such a kind mention of SoulPerSuit too. I'm sending Rhonda and Sandi over to watch this.

Waaaay not enough piano playing though. Give us more.

I completely forgot to say how brilliant it is to create collages of your characters as they develop. What a great way to get a full-bodied view of how they live. What they like to read. The car they drive. Their fashion taste. The quirky habits no one will no about, but still work into the fiber of their imaginative being.
Great idea.
if I ever write a novel I'm stealing it.

oh wow, oh wow, oh wow . . . three goodies in one!

1) we got to see you live! that means animated with a voice! so cool the way the flat screen can do that after over a year of just reading your words.

2) we got a shout-out to our friend erin teske! woohoo! that girl rocks.

3) we got to hear you tinkle those keys (and GRANDLY, i might add!). i was sitting there the whole time you were sitting at the piano hoping-hoping-hoping you'd play for us . . . and you did! awesome.

loved it. i can't wait for the next video blog installment!

Thank you! It was fun to make. And fun to show off my baby.

I have ideas for my next ones...

This is really cool--both because I like the ideas you talk about and because I felt like I got to know you better. I didn't know you knitted, or that you've studied music. It's cool to get a little glimpse inside your home and your soul.

And then there are the ideas you mentioned...I resonate with the thought that doing some creative things is different than doing others...I've definitely felt the same. And what I love about everyone being creative is that it looks so different. For me, it can mean painting or taking photos, and for my husband it can mean putting two ideas together in a new way or solving a problem differently than we've ever done it before. God is so creative that even creativity doesn't look the same from person to person! How very cool!

This is one of the most fun parts about being married--seeing God's creativity in a whole new way. My husband is an entrepeneur at heart. He can see something and ten ideas spring into his head--what if we did this or offered this for people? In fact, he told me to watch this business video. This morning we were talking about it.

Did it give you any ideas? he asked.

Oh, I was supposed to be getting ideas?
