In light of fiction reading, writing, and 'rythmatic (okay, so not so much the 'rythmatic)...

For those of us addicted to writing in the first person, I found the blog post challenging:

The Dangers of First-Person Narrative.

Good stuff to keep in mind.

interesting analysis...it makes total sense, but of course, some of what they write about, like "show not tell" is what any writer faces, no? But creating a believable character in the first person, you do have to get inside of the character. I imagine it's a bit like acting, no?

Good comparison. I'm learning that just because I'm in first person doesn't mean that I have to tell every thought that goes through the character's mind. Also, not everyone sits around for hours a day examining their thoughts and desires (although, I confess, some of us do). And that the narrator may be unreliable. That's the challenge--relaying "false" information to tell the story or showing things from their eyes (although, really, that's the same for every POV).

i found it terrifying. it's my biggest fear about writing really...being called inauthentic. like i'll write something and then someone else will come along and say, "phtht...what a bunch of crap." and then i'll reread it and realize that it really is just a bunch of crap. (this fear comes from re-reading old journals, blushing the whole time.) are you ever afraid of this?

oh, and thanks for the heads up on the holiday...i would never have known...

That's my fear as well. I have good days and bad days--days when I know I can trust God because He called me to this and days when I know my writing sucks.
